Distance Learning Environment

In setting up my own website, I decided that the best way to use the actual website is as a resource for students and not just a message board for posting homework.

The saturation of the Internet, in our society, has created a virtual classroom that many colleges are utilizing for Distance Learning. My plan is to set up my website as a way for students to learn on their own at home. I made my website feature as much multimedia as possible. My only wish is to make the contents of the webpages more dynamic so that site can actually interact and change with the students’ learning.

I am trying my hand out with PHP and mysql. These are online databases that make websites dynamic. The Blog section uses those two features which allow me to make changes and post information on the fly. Slowly but surely my web site will become what I hope it to be. (I just have to get through the learning curve.)

Back from Back-to-School Night

Well, I just got back from back to school night and I had a great time. It felt that parents were very excited to see what their kids were doing in school.

I printed out 200 pamphlets and had 50 left over. I hope that the pamphlets convey the information that I wish I had time to cover. But thanks to this website, parents and students will have the information at their fingertips!

This is Where my Brother is!

This is an aerial shot of Singapore. Somewhere in that blob of land is my brother working and toiling away. The working environment there is very different than here in the US. Here we’re used to 8 hour work days and over there most people work at least 10 hours a day.

The Power of the Word

I decided to update my classroom by using some famous and not so famous quotes. I took down the old Eagles pictures from the front of the classroom and out up 19 new posters so that kids are both inspired and motivated. They are embodiment of what true passion for life is and how to live it.

Some of my most favorite quotes are from Vince Lombardi who epitomizes the role of a leader and summarizes the word “Team”.

  • “Coaches who can outline plays on a blackboard are a dime a dozen. The ones who win get inside their players and motivate.”
  • “The difference between a successful person and others is not a lack of strength, not a lack of knowledge, but rather is a lack or will.”
  • “Football teams are no different from any groups. They are good examples of success and failure, of competence and incompetence, of inspiration and dullness.”
  • I firmly believe that any man’s finest hour is that moment when he has worked his heart out in a good cause and lies exhausted on the field of battle, victorious.”
  • “In great attempts, it is glorious even to fail.”
  • “They call it coaching but it is teaching. You do not just tell them…you show them the reasons.”
  • New Orleans - The City that Rose from the Waters

It’s amazing how the sport of football can actually rejuvenate a city that has been through so much this past year. The Superdome, once was a symbol of despair and destruction, has now become a symbol of life slowly returning back to the city of New Orleans. The Saints are playing inspired football tonight and they are doing an amazing job in showing the city that they will bring life to their home with every game they win. Right now the Saints look to be one of the best teams in the NFL.

Below are pictures of the Superdome before and after the destruction caused by Katrina.

    Unclogging Bandwidth

Now that I’ve finished making movies for all of my Pro/Desktop information, I can use them as multimedia aids. My original plan was to have students use mrdeleon.com as the resource if they got stuck on a tutorial. But because it would be near impossible for the schools’ bandwidth to handle 34 computers accessing the same website, that idea is out the window.

My plan now is to use the intranet of my lab. Because the network speed is 100 Mb per second, this would be the best choice. I would use a shortcut on the desktops of the lab computers that will have the different tutorial movies as links that would open them when clicked on.

    Eagles Fly in San Francisco

Te Eagles defeated the 49ers in a game that featured Brian Westbrook. Westbrook scored 3 TDs (2 on the ground and 1 reception for a TD). Even without Donte Stallworth, Donovan McNabb threw for almost 300 yards and 2 TDs. The Eagles are now the first in their division after the Giants lost to the Seahawks.

    Pro/Desktop Videos are Officially Finished

In trying to extend my classroom, I’ve recently completed all of Pro/Desktop videos in flash format. These videos will allow students, who are falling behind, to work at home. They can download the tutorial and watch the corresponding flash movie that will help with the assignments. The videos will answer many of the common questions that come up when students are using Pro/Desktop.

    See them for yourself:

    Pictures from Singapore

Here are some pictures from my brother who lives in Singapore. He recently moved there about 3 months ago for a change in environment. He works as a brand manager for Proctor and Gamble, focusing on the Pringles Brand. His job is to market Pringles so that they can sell more. If you’ve seen “The Apprentice”, you can get an idea of what he does for a living.

    My Football Team Won Again!

We had a great game today and our team really hit on all cylinders. Our Offense looked really good and the Defense made great stops. We have great chemistry on this team, and we are officially 4-2.

    Brian Westbrook to Play Sunday!

Brian Westbrook is expected to play this sunday against the 49ers. After sitting out the past 3 practices, Coach Andy Read affirms that Brian Westbrook is good to go!
